Lizzie Sanders’ work is botanically accurate, painted meticulously in watercolor using a dry brush technique. She aims to produce contemporary “graphic” images where neither art nor science is compromised and is particularly interested in the tension created by presenting an image which reads as truly 3-dimensional against a stark, flat, white background. Educated in graphic design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, now part of the University of Dundee, Lizzie worked as an art director and graphic designer for five years in Italy and then spent three years in New York on Madison Avenue with a major advertising agency. Lizzie tutors advanced botanical illustration at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, and occasionally teaches small, specially organized master classes in the U.S. and U.K.

She has exhibited work at the RHS Show in London three times and on each occasion was awarded a gold medal. Dr. Shirley Sherwood’s contemporary collection of botanical illustration includes three of her paintings. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation and the RHS Lindley Library.

Lizzie Sanders’ awards include the ASBA Diane Bouchier Award for Excellence, inclusion in the Highgrove Florilegium by The Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation and the Mary Mendum Medal by the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society. In 2007, Lizzie won a judges’ Award of Excellence at “Blossom – the Art of Flowers,” a competitive exhibition sponsored by the Susan K. Black Foundation in the U.S.

Lizzie Sanders: Daffodils in Watercolor
Welcome spring with a botanical master! Celebrated artist Lizzie Sanders joins us from Edinburgh to share her special techniques for rendering dynamic daffodils in watercolor. Lizzie’s luminous and highly detailed works are inspiring both artistically and scientifically. We’ll provide the daffodils for you to paint. Begin with the bloom and continue to compose and paint right down to the roots. Demonstrations and discussion of the dry-brush technique will focus on drawing, composition and color matching to help you produce a lively painting of a small clump of “tete-a-tete” daffodils, including buds, flowers, leaves and roots. This 1-day workshop will give you a little taste of the techniques that have made Lizzie Sanders famous among botanical artists.
